The ›Mosaic field‹ at Eski Kahta, Adiyamin province. A reassessment of the evidence based on the material from the Dörner Archive

This contribution reassesses the archaeological evidence excavated by F. K. Dörner and his team in 1963 and 1965 at Eski K˘ahta, in the area known in modern literature as ›Mosaic field‹. The excavation aimed to clarify the evolution of a building decorated with mosaics, located to the southwest of Eski Kale. In four interim reports, the excavators concluded that the structure dated to the Hellenistic or Early Roman period. A large portion of the documentation of this excavation is now lost. However, an extensive collection of photographs at the Forschungsstelle Asia Minor, University of Münster, allows for a clearer understanding of the building’s spatial development and a reassessment of its chronology and function. Although the surviving documentation is patchy and incomplete, it is reasonable to assume that the building was a late antique bathhouse, presumably associated with a rural settlement.
